Sandfall Interactive is already looking ahead to its next project following the breakout success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, with studio leadership indicating that the team wants to let go of limitations and "go a bit crazy" for its sophomore outing.

In an interview with Automaton, Sandfall CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the studio's mindset after spending years developing their debut turn-based RPG. Broche noted that while it is still too early to discuss specific details about the upcoming game, the internal team wants to recapture the same passion that drove Expedition 33 through its lengthy development cycle.

Development Timeline and Studio Size

Developing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a massive undertaking for the independent French studio. Broche revealed that the project took him six years, while co-founder Tom Guillermin spent five and a half years on it. Most other team members dedicated between four and five years to the game.

Despite having "more than enough people" now to get the ball rolling on a new game, Sandfall is keeping its team lean. The studio currently sits at 26 employees. Broche emphasized that keeping the company small is an intentional choice, arguing that strict limitations are what fuel creativity and force a team to focus on what truly matters.

The next project has not yet entered pre-production, meaning players will be waiting a while longer before Sandfall reveals what form its next game will take.
