Despite drawing over 200 million new players to Xbox and its games, Microsoft's gaming division suffered its worst quarter in years during the final months of its 2026 fiscal year. According to CEO Asha Sharma, the massive influx of players failed to translate into business growth.
Quick Facts
- Audience Growth: Over 200 million new players came to Xbox and its games in fiscal year 2026.
- Revenue Declines: Content and services revenue fell by 10%, while hardware revenue dropped 13%.
- Restructuring: Microsoft cut 3,200 Xbox employees in sweeping layoffs across the division.
- Studio Changes: Double Fine and Compulsion Games became independent, while Undead Labs and Ninja Theory joined new ownership.
- Growth Target: Xbox expects to return to financial growth by the end of fiscal year 2027.
The Gap Between Audience and Revenue
The financial downturn occurred despite a busy release schedule over the past fiscal year that included titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Forza Horizon 6, The Outer Worlds 2, and Ninja Gaiden 4. Evergreen hits such as Minecraft and Candy Crush, alongside multiplatform ports like Starfield, successfully drove up player numbers, but that engagement did not match financial returns.
“In fiscal year 2026, over 200 million new players came to Xbox and our games, but our business did not grow with our audience,” Sharma noted on social media. “We need to close that gap by investing in what players value. That will take time, but we expect to return to growth by the end of fiscal year 2027.”
Restructuring and Future Strategy
To address the financial mismatch, Sharma initiated major structural changes earlier this month. Alongside the layoffs of 3,200 employees, the division altered its studio makeup by spinning out four first-party developers. Double Fine and Compulsion Games now operate as independent developers, whereas Undead Labs and Ninja Theory are transitioning to new ownership.
Looking ahead for the current fiscal year, Xbox is leaning on a renewed focus on console exclusives to right the ship, with the upcoming launch of Gears of War: E-Day slated for later this year.
