War Thunder's Nuclear Escalation mode has returned to PC with significant mechanical updates. Running from July 22, 2026, until July 28, 2026, the event challenges players to conduct large-scale operations involving nuclear weapons, ground support, and naval engagement.
Quick Facts
- Event Window: July 22, 13:00 GMT – July 28, 13:00 GMT.
- Aircraft Eras: Two distinct eras split into four Battle Rating brackets (10.3–12.0, 11.7–12.7, 13.0–14.0, and 13.7–14.7).
- Nation Lineups: USSR vs. everyone or USSR + China vs. everyone.
- Reward Changes: Silver Lion payouts for ground vehicle destruction have doubled.
New Aircraft Eras and Balancing
The latest iteration of the mode introduces a dual-era structure. Players can now participate in separate mission variants based on their aircraft's Battle Rating. This allows for a more focused combat environment, keeping early-era technology separate from the late-era equipment, which now includes the new nuclear carriers recently added to Ground Battles.
Balance adjustments also extend to the team lineups, which are now strictly limited to USSR vs. everyone or a combined USSR and China force facing the remaining nations.
Refining Anti-Aircraft Systems
A primary focus of this update is the behavior of anti-aircraft (AA) systems. To resolve past performance issues that required disabling search radars, developers have implemented new optimizations. Short-range SAM systems will now activate their radar once an aircraft enters a zone roughly 1.5 times the missile’s range, providing players enough warning to deploy countermeasures or utilize anti-radiation missiles (ARMs).
The update also introduces specific tactical changes for SAM sites:
- Movement Restrictions: SAM systems in convoys must now slow down to launch and guide missiles, preventing them from firing accurately while moving at full speed.
- ARM Countermeasures: SAM systems can now temporarily shut down their radar when detecting incoming ARMs. This forces players to fire their missiles from closer distances to ensure accuracy.
- Targeting Logic: Long-range air defense systems have been restricted from firing on low-flying targets beyond 20 kilometers and will prioritize targets moving toward them rather than away.
- AI Prioritization: Munitions like GBU-39, GBU-53, and other stealth or small-profile weapons now have a temporary "pseudo-RCS" mechanic, causing SAM AI to assign them lower priority.
Economic and Naval Adjustments
The mission economy has been rebalanced to emphasize ground targets. While rewards for destroying aircraft have been reduced by 8%, the compensation for destroying ground vehicles has doubled. Furthermore, the ticket cost for vehicles has been adjusted to make ground combat a more decisive factor in shifting the course of an operation.
Naval combat has received similar attention. Ship-based SAM AI and armament have been reworked, and ships are now equipped with SM-2MR (RIM-66C) missiles. Additionally, the seeker heads for anti-ship missiles and guided bombs have been updated to target critical crew compartments, making attacks on major vessels like aircraft carriers more impactful.
