Valve's upcoming Steam Frame is moving closer to its release window, with back-end technical preparations coming to light. Over the weekend, both the Lepton and FEX software components became fully public on Steam, signaling that the hardware debut is near.
Steam Frame Compatibility and Translation Layers
Because the Steam Frame runs on an Arm processor—specifically the 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3—running games requires various translation layers and compatibility tools depending on the source platform. Valve has outlined three primary standalone methods for running games on the device:
- Windows via Proton: Windows games utilize Proton, a compatibility layer built on a modified version of Wine and high-performance graphics API implementations like DXVK, which translates DirectX into the Steam Frame's native Vulkan graphics API.
- Android via Lepton: Android games run through Lepton, a container-based compatibility layer designed to minimize overhead while allowing Android titles to function on Linux.
- x86 via FEX: FEX translates 32-bit and 64-bit x86 compiled games into Arm64 instructions. It reduces emulation overhead by forwarding API calls directly to native host system libraries like OpenGL or Vulkan, while utilizing code caching to minimize in-game stuttering.
ARM64 Compatibility Metadata Appears
In addition to the public listings for Lepton and FEX, a Steam Frame ARM64 Compat List has appeared on SteamDB. Metadata entries highlight how specific titles have been tagged for the hardware, such as The Long Dark utilizing proton-arm64ec-4 and Streets of Rage 4 using proton-arm64ec-experimental. In addition to standalone play via these compatibility layers, users will also be able to stream games directly from their PC to the Steam Frame.
