In The Blood of Dawnwalker, developer Rebel Wolves is moving away from generic "mwahaha" villainy in favor of a calculated, sociopolitical threat. Set in the plague-ridden valley of Vale Sangora, the game focuses on the rise of Brencis, a Roman-era noble who has transformed the region into a "vampiric feudalism" state.

The Myth of the Tooth
Narrative director Jakub Szamalek explains that the game’s unique take on vampirism centers on the concept of teeth as seeds. Unlike traditional folklore, a vampire in this world must sacrifice a fang—breaking it from their own jaw—to create a new spawn. This biological necessity has a grotesque side effect: as vampires age, they grow extra rows of teeth, which eventually burst through their skin in a display of body horror.
Brencis himself is not interested in senseless destruction. According to Szamalek, he is a rational actor who views the valley as his flock—a mix of a religious congregation and a blood farm. He offers the population safety from the Black Death in exchange for taxes paid in blood and total allegiance.
The Fiefdom Structure
The campaign is structured around a web of quests centered on Brencis and his three lieutenants: Ambrus, Xanthe, and Bakir. Each lieutenant manages a specific fiefdom within the valley:
- Food Supply: Overseeing the blood-farming operations.
- PR/Management: Handling rewards and punishments to prevent uprisings.
- R&D: Researching ways to empower the regime and the vampires' personal abilities.
Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz notes that players are not forced to dismantle these power structures. While completing these quests weakens Brencis’ castle defenses, players can choose to stay under the radar and assault the castle while it remains at full power—though he warns this is a significantly more difficult path.
Consequences of Infamy
Disrupting the vampire regime is not a risk-free endeavor. As you interfere with the lieutenants' operations, their "anger meter" rises, eventually forcing a direct confrontation. Furthermore, the valley-wide Infamy system tracks your status as a troublemaker. High infamy can lead to Brencis placing a bounty on your head or putting entire cities on lockdown.
However, being infamous is a double-edged sword. While it makes you a target for the regime's soldiers, it can also make you more intimidating to NPCs and open up alliances with groups that share your hatred for Brencis, potentially unlocking unique perks.
