Unknown Worlds has finally addressed one of the most persistent frustrations in Subnautica 2. As of July 8, 2026, the game’s first major update—titled Adaptive Measures—is live, introducing long-requested tools to help players manage the game's aggressive sealife.
The update marks a shift in how players interact with the environment. Previously, attempting to defend yourself against over-aggressive creatures often felt demoralizing, as the game lacked tangible feedback for defensive actions. With this patch, the Survival Multitool now triggers a recoil animation when you hit a creature, forcing it to flee. Even more effective is the new functionality for the Sonic Resonator, which now acts as a stun weapon. When used, it causes fish to lose consciousness and float away, offering a much-needed defensive option for players navigating dangerous waters.
New Biomods and Quality of Life Changes
Beyond the combat additions, Adaptive Measures expands the game's progression systems. Players can now discover and plunder new abandoned Biomods early in the game. You also have more slots available to equip these DNA-bending abilities, with Unknown Worlds confirming that a new scanner will be added later in the game to unlock further options.
The update also touches on several quality-of-life adjustments:
- PDA Overhaul: You can now listen to previous recordings at will.
- Base Building: A new, larger storage option is available for bases, though it does not automatically link to fabricators.
- Creature Behavior: Blight creatures now provide clearer signals regarding their attack status.
- Exploration: Wrecks throughout the game have received design updates, including new puzzles to make them more rewarding to clear.
Looking Toward Co-op
While the Adaptive Measures update focuses on individual survival, the developer has provided a glimpse of what is coming next in the Early Access roadmap. Update 1.2 is set to prioritize the co-op experience, with plans to introduce proximity voice chat, emotes, and the ability for players to revive one another and trade items. Additionally, the team is working on improving the base builder tool, the pinned recipes UI, and overall HUD signals.
For those waiting on the larger world and story expansion, Unknown Worlds confirmed that those elements are currently in development. For now, players can dive back in to test out the new defensive tools and explore the updated wreckage environments.
