It is difficult to imagine the current gaming landscape without Stardew Valley. As a modern standard-bearer for the cozy and retro-styled genre, the game has grown into a massive success since its 2016 launch. However, according to creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the project nearly met an abrupt end before it ever reached the public.

The Crash That Almost Ended Stardew Valley

In a recent republication of a 2016 interview, Barone reflected on the early, chaotic days of the game's creation. About a year into development, the PC he was using for the project suffered an unexpected crash. With no backups in place, Barone initially assumed the project was lost forever.

“In retrospect, it feels crazy that it all worked out,” Barone told PC Gamer. “The whole development was so sloppy. It was the most indie development you could imagine: no professional style at all, figuring it all out as I go, and just the scrappiest code you could imagine.”

Barone eventually managed to salvage the data from the old hard drive, allowing him to build a new machine and resume work. Despite his own embarrassment regarding the “scrappy” nature of the original code, this recovery allowed the title to eventually bloom into the phenomenon it is today.

Looking Toward Haunted Chocolatier

Following the massive success of Stardew Valley—which holds an 89 Metacritic score and is available across nearly every modern platform including PC, consoles, and mobile—Barone is currently focused on his next project, Haunted Chocolatier.

Building on the foundation established by his first hit, Barone notes that the development process for his follow-up is significantly different. With the experience of Stardew Valley behind him and a small team assisting with production, fans can expect a more refined development cycle for the upcoming game. Barone has acknowledged that the project is taking time, but he remains committed to going over every detail to ensure the final product meets his standards.
