Axolot Games has officially launched the Scrap Mechanic 1.0 update on PC, marking the biggest release in the game's history after years in development. Some team members have worked on the project since 2011, and this milestone aims to deliver on long-standing promises made to the community.
Quick Facts
- Platform: PC (Steam)
- Version: 1.0
- Key Expansion: Drilling Thunder
- Major Additions: Full survival story, world overhaul, next-gen lighting, new building parts, and improved multiplayer network responsiveness.
Story Mode and World Overhaul
For the first time, Survival mode features a complete story from beginning to end. Players embark on a main quest to discover why bots went rogue on the Farming Planet and find a way home after a ship crash. The campaign features fully voice-acted NPCs encountered throughout the expanded world.
The terrain generation has been reworked with new tiles, forest roads, desert biomes, and hazardous tornadoes. Explorers will also come across updated ruins, growlabs, and random NPCs needing assistance.
Building and Terrain Tools
Builders gain access to a large assortment of new blocks, interactive components, and parts available immediately in Creative mode. Alongside these additions comes the Claygun, a tool for both Creative and Survival modes that lets players shape the ground. However, environmental defenses require caution, as newly introduced bots possess the ability to dig through clay barricades.
Expanded Enemy Roster and Combat
The survival enemy pool has more than doubled from the original five bots. These additions introduce new combat encounters and defensive strategies. Developers specifically advise caution around the Red Explosive Totebot, highlighting him as a high-priority threat in battle.
Next-Gen Visuals and Performance Optimizations
The 1.0 release introduces a dynamic lighting and weather system that functions without requiring ray-tracing hardware. The engine now supports up to 512 simultaneous dynamic light sources, volumetric sunlight and clouds, global illumination, responsive weather, realistic water rendering, and reactive grass. Additionally, multiplayer fans benefit from a major wave of optimizations focused on network responsiveness to smooth out co-op sessions.
