Roblox has been shifting its focus toward more rigorous safety measures over the last 18 months, according to James Kay, Senior Director of International Communications. Following the introduction of new parental controls in November 2024, the platform has continued to roll out updates aimed at securing its diverse user base.
Quick Facts
- Demographics: Roughly one-third of the player base is under 13, one-third is 13–17, and one-third is 18 or older.
- Safety Technology: Facial age estimation is now mandatory to access chat features.
- Verification Accuracy: Current age verification systems are accurate within an average of 1.4 years.
- Parental Tools: Parents are encouraged to link their accounts to their children's to manage spending, chat permissions, and game access.
The Evolution of Age Verification
As the platform has expanded to include a significant adult population, the approach to safety has changed. Kay notes that the implementation of facial age checks, which became mandatory for chat access in November 2025, serves a dual purpose. By placing users in specific age brackets, the system aims to ensure that children chat with children and adults with adults, creating a more tailored experience for both groups.
"I think if you were to ask the average person on the street, they've heard of Roblox. How would they describe it? They would describe it as a kids' game," Kay says. "We're not exclusively for kids. And actually, I think what we've seen in recent years is our age demographic broadening."
Safety as an Ongoing Process
Addressing the challenge of users attempting to bypass safety protocols, Kay maintains that the platform’s current age-gating is a significant deterrent. He points out that for younger users, accessing an account meant for an older bracket actually degrades the experience because they lose the ability to communicate with peers in their own age group.
Regarding the upcoming UK social media ban for those under 16, Kay emphasized that Roblox is monitoring the situation but noted a distinction between gaming platforms and social media. He stated that the company’s philosophy is to go "above and beyond" regulatory requirements, a strategy they have already applied by rolling out age verification tools globally, regardless of local mandates.
Empowering Parents
For parents concerned about their children’s activity, Kay suggests a hands-on approach. Beyond utilizing the platform’s built-in parental controls to restrict spending and interactions, he advocates for "co-play." By participating in games alongside their children, parents can better understand the content their kids are engaging with.
As for the future of safety on the platform, Kay remains clear: "I think safety is never an endpoint, right? So there's constantly going to be things we're doing to enhance it and improve."
