Obsidian Entertainment is reportedly working on a new entry in the Fallout series. Following the cancellation of an Avowed sequel by Microsoft, internal reports indicate that studio veteran Josh Sawyer is leading the development of this new Fallout project.
The Studio's Track Record
Obsidian has a long history of navigating challenging development cycles to produce highly regarded RPGs. Since 2004, the studio has released titles including Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol, and Fallout: New Vegas. The studio's ability to deliver acclaimed narratives often occurred despite significant constraints, such as the 18-month development window provided for Fallout: New Vegas.
Current Studio Challenges
The development of this new project comes at a difficult time for the studio. After being acquired by Microsoft in 2018, Obsidian has faced internal instability, including significant layoffs. Despite these hurdles, the studio maintains experience with the Fallout formula, having spent much of the last decade developing The Outer Worlds and its sequel—titles that served as spiritual successors to the Fallout style.
Why a New Fallout Matters
Industry observers and fans alike have long viewed Fallout: New Vegas as a high-water mark for the franchise. The studio's recent output, including Grounded and Pentiment, has demonstrated that its design teams remain capable of critical success. With Josh Sawyer at the helm, the studio aims to apply its extensive experience with systemic RPGs to return to the Fallout universe, potentially moving past the creative rut observed in the studio's more recent RPG releases.
