Metal Gear fans have long clamored for more opportunities to step into the boots of the series' legendary side characters. While the original 1998 Metal Gear Solid is notoriously strict about keeping players in Solid Snake’s shoes, a new mod from YouTube user Perfect Pizza is finally giving the series’ first Cyborg Ninja, Grey Fox, his time in the spotlight.
The “Playable Grey Fox mod” for the PC version of Metal Gear Solid goes far beyond a simple character swap. While Grey Fox was briefly playable in the VR Missions expansion, this mod aims to make him feel like a fully integrated, functional part of the main game. According to the creator, the project uses the PSX decompilation project’s ability to modify the game’s C code, allowing for a new executable built from the developer version of the game.
New Abilities and Custom Mechanics
Perfect Pizza’s release is remarkably detailed, incorporating features that were never present in previous iterations of the character. Players now have access to the iconic arm cannon, a weapon Grey Fox used during the base game but never actually controlled in his VR Missions appearance. The High Frequency Blade has also received a significant overhaul, now featuring a new trailing effect and the ability to deflect bullets back at enemies.
The mod introduces several quality-of-life and immersion improvements, including:
- New crouch-walking movement options.
- Automatic face visor animations that toggle during alerts.
- Custom animations tailored to the character.
- Custom codec calls.
Reverse Engineering a Classic
Creating this mod was no small feat. Perfect Pizza noted on their Discord that at the time of development, neither the AI-controlled Grey Fox boss nor the VR Missions playable version had been fully decompiled. Consequently, the team relied on reverse engineering, existing game code, and educated guesses to rebuild the character's functionality while preserving core mechanics like elevators, environmental interactions, and the classic crawling system.
The current release is intended to provide an expanded experience compared to what was possible in VR Missions. However, the developer is clear that this is not a complete story-mode conversion. A separate, unaffiliated project is currently working to rebuild the game's stage overlays to allow for a full campaign playthrough. Perfect Pizza noted that the possibility of a full Grey Fox campaign depends heavily on the progress of that separate effort.
For those interested in following the development or trying the mod, further details and updates are available through the project's Discord server. While a full conversion remains a goal for the future, this release serves as an impressive expansion that finally lets players experience the ninja gameplay they have wanted for over two decades.
