Microsoft is introducing a new program for Xbox players that bridges physical and digital libraries, allowing owners of disc-based titles to unlock a digital entitlement for their accounts. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced the feature via X, noting that the rollout begins for Xbox Insiders starting August 31.

Quick Facts

  • Launch Date: August 31 for Xbox Insiders
  • Initial Scope: Starts with a few thousand supported titles
  • Platform: Xbox Series X and broader ecosystem

Under the new system, players can 'claim' a physical game on their account. This grants access to the title even when the disc is not physically inside the console's disc tray. Claiming a game also extends access via Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, enabling play on phones and PCs complete with cloud saves.

Impact on Lending and the Preowned Market

Physical discs will continue to function as normal after being added to an account. Players can still physically lend games to friends. Because the digital license added to an account is revocable, anyone who buys a preowned physical copy of a game that was previously claimed digitally can remove the prior license using the physical disc, ensuring the preowned market remains unaffected.

Microsoft stated that its goal is to make it easier for player libraries to move forward as part of a broader commitment to game preservation. The initial rollout on August 31 will include a few thousand titles, with more games to be added over time.
