Metanet Software developers Mare Sheppard and Raigan Burns have detailed N Plus Infinity Times Two, a new party-first entry in the long-running minimalist platformer franchise. Originally starting as a browser game in 2004 before moving to digital distribution and Steam with N++, the series is now pivoting to expand vestigial multiplayer elements into a dedicated party experience on PC.

Quick Facts

  • Developer: Metanet Software (Mare Sheppard and Raigan Burns)
  • Platform: PC (Steam)
  • Funding: Backed in part by the Canada Media Fund and Ontario Creates

New Multiplayer Modes

Unlike previous single-player-focused titles in the series, N Plus Infinity Times Two builds out cooperative and competitive mechanics across two primary modes:

  • Race Mode: Players rush to the finish line to secure fast-clear points while opting to transform into a rocket to interfere with opponents, or gather gold for bonus points while denying it to competitors.
  • Team Tag Mode: Partners attempt to survive while avoiding a team of invincible hunters equipped with rocket transformations, before swapping sides to stop the opposing team's time.

Funding and Industry Perspective

Development on the project has received backing from Canadian government support programs, including the Canada Media Fund and provincial programs like Ontario Creates. Creator Raigan Burns noted that these alternative funding models help smaller teams endure a Steam marketplace where the sheer volume of daily game releases has made commercial success heavily front-loaded toward top earners.

While Sheppard and Burns previously viewed N++ as the final entry in the series, positive playtesting and ongoing creative exploration led them back to the franchise. If the game finds an audience, the developers are open to continuing updates, noting they already have a second game's worth of cut content available.
