If you're jumping into Meccha Chameleon, you're one of millions currently trying to master the art of the perfect disguise. Whether you're struggling to stay hidden or having trouble spotting opponents, these tips will help you climb the skill curve.
1. Practice in a Private Server
It’s difficult to learn the mechanics when you're under pressure. Navigate to the main menu and select Create Server. Set the max player count to 1 to ensure you have the stage to yourself. This is the best way to explore map layouts and refine your painting technique without the threat of being found by a hunter.
2. Master Hiding in Plain Sight
Scoring points in Meccha Chameleon is tied to how long you spend within a hunter's sightline. Instead of hiding in a corner, look for objects you can mimic. Curling up next to balloons or matching the color of nearby structures makes you incredibly difficult to spot. As you get more comfortable, try to blend into complex patterns or expand your character model to look like a natural part of the environment.
3. Use the 3D Eyedropper for Perfect Camouflage
A good disguise relies on color accuracy. Hold Space to activate the 3D Eyedropper, which displays a crosshair that follows the contours of the environment. Left-click to select your target color. You can also hold the Right mouse button while moving left or right to adjust your brush size, allowing you to fill in large areas quickly or add fine details to your disguise.
4. Know When to Stay Put
It’s tempting to run when a hunter gets close, but often, the best strategy is to stay completely still. If you’ve done your job well, a hunter might walk right past you. Only move if your cover is definitely blown. If you are spotted, keep moving and change direction erratically to break their sightline, taking advantage of the hunter's need to pause between shots.
5. Strategic Hiding vs. Blending In
You can choose to hide completely out of sight to survive longer, though you won't earn as many points as you would by blending in. If you find a secluded spot, still apply a basic coat of paint. Be careful not to clip too far into the scenery; if you see a warning that your body is “buried too much,” adjust your position immediately or you will start flashing red for all hunters to see.
6. Expand Your Map Library
While the game includes several original maps, the PC version benefits from a massive library of user-created levels in the Steam Workshop. If a lobby selects a map you don't own, follow the on-screen prompt to download it for free. Favorites like The Village, Art Gallery, and Where’s Wally?/Waldo? come highly recommended.
7. Tips for Hunters
Don't fall into the trap of obsessively combing every inch of the map. Instead, perform a quick, broad sweep first to identify anything that looks out of place. Many hiders will be sitting in plain sight, making them easy to spot if you don't overthink your search. Finally, remember that you can use the paint tools to customize your own hunter look—just don't spend the whole round decorating while your opponents are hiding!
