Actor Matthew McConaughey has confirmed that he was approached for the lead role of Joel in HBO's The Last of Us. Speaking on the August 13 episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, McConaughey revealed that he was in direct contact with showrunner Craig Mazin regarding the project.
Despite the high profile of the series, McConaughey explained that the timing did not align with his professional focus at that stage in his career. "I wasn't really acting at that point," he noted. "I was doing more writing and looking at leadership roles in life."
Commitment and Career Direction
Beyond his shift in focus, McConaughey cited the structure of television production as a factor in his decision. Reflecting on the multi-year commitment required for a successful show, he expressed hesitation about signing on for a long-term project. While he noted that the material for The Last of Us was "really good" and that he was "really excited" about the prospect, he ultimately decided it was not the right fit for him at the time.
McConaughey’s previous experience with long-form television was limited to the first season of True Detective, a project he described as a "real coup" that succeeded at a time when top-tier actors were less likely to transition into television series. Following his decision to pass on The Last of Us, the role of Joel was filled by Pedro Pascal.
