Gameplay and Mechanics
In Fogpiercer, players command an armed locomotive navigating a frozen, bandit-filled wasteland. The core loop revolves around card-based tactical combat where the train itself serves as the player's deck. As runs progress, players can add new carriages to their train, introducing fresh cards and strategic options.
Combat emphasizes positioning and environmental interaction. Players can utilize harpoons, shunting maneuvers, and truck-blasting tactics to manipulate enemy placement. The game features over 170 cards covering damage, movement, and status effects. Each run is further influenced by the player’s choice of driver, who provides unique abilities such as time manipulation or the summoning of ghost units.
Routes and Progression
The game’s structure involves navigating split paths across two distinct biomes, each featuring different hazards, shops, and combat encounters. Because enemy intentions are telegraphed before their turn, players are encouraged to plan sequences that maximize chain reactions, such as pushing foes into the path of an oncoming train.
Successful completion of regional boss fights rewards players with new gear. Between runs, players unlock additional engines, drivers, and carriage types, allowing for deeper customization in subsequent attempts.
Technical Considerations
The game offers native support for Linux at launch. While it is also listed for play on the Steam Deck, the developer has not yet provided specific test data regarding frame rates, battery consumption, or general hardware performance. Similarly, there is no current information regarding Proton or Vulkan integration for desktop users. As of now, mod support and open-source tools have not been implemented.
