Square Enix has officially introduced the first new job coming to Final Fantasy XIV in the upcoming Evercold expansion. Revealed at the Berlin Fan Festival, the new class is called the Bastion, a main tank role defined by its unique approach to combat.
Quick Facts
- New Job: Bastion (Main Tank).
- Signature Weapon: Dual weapons identified as "skyltborg."
- Release Window: January 2027.
- Combat System: Exclusive to the "evolved mode" battle system arriving with Evercold.
The Bastion Playstyle
The Bastion functions as a tank that combines offensive and defensive capabilities into a single instrument. According to the teaser trailer, the class utilizes dual weapons called "skyltborg," which allow players to block incoming attacks while simultaneously shooting laser blasts and stabbing foes. The animations shown feature a roegadyn character performing high-mobility maneuvers, including launching into the air to deliver ranged shots followed by melee uppercuts.
During the Berlin Fan Festival, game director Naoki Yoshida appeared on stage in full cosplay of the new job to showcase the aesthetic. While the weapons draw visual comparisons to the supersized gunshields used by the character Rhitahtyn Arvina, the Bastion appears to be a distinct addition to the Final Fantasy setting.
Expansion Details and Availability
The introduction of the Bastion comes with a significant shift in how the game handles combat. Developers confirmed that the job will be playable exclusively in the "evolved mode," a pruned version of the battle system being implemented as part of the Evercold update.
Players looking for more information on the expansion can expect additional details later this year during the Tokyo Fan Festival. Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is currently set for a full release in January 2027.
