Director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final installment in the current remake trilogy, will prioritize player guidance to combat the challenges of open-world design. As the development team prepares for a 2027 launch, the focus remains on ensuring that players can navigate the game's increased scale without feeling overwhelmed.
Quick Facts
- Expected Release: Spring 2027
- Confirmed Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S
- World Size: Larger than Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Managing Open World Fatigue
Following feedback regarding the vast scale of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, Hamaguchi acknowledged that "open world fatigue" is a central design concern. In a recent interview, he noted that while being dropped into a large, mysterious world can be an exciting experience, it often leaves players unsure of their objectives or where to begin.
Hamaguchi emphasized that providing "proper guidance" is a priority for the development team. He stated that the goal is to ensure players "know what to do, and know where to go" without stripping away the sense of wonder associated with exploring a sprawling fantasy environment.
Design Philosophy for the Trilogy Finale
To strike this balance, the team is applying the design philosophy used in Rebirth, where players were provided with clear indicators regarding the amount and difficulty of available content. According to Hamaguchi, this approach is being scaled up for Revelation to account for the larger map.
One specific method of navigation mentioned by the director involves the return of the Highwind airship. Hamaguchi explained that the game will encourage players to rely on their own memory and spatial awareness when navigating via the airship, offering a form of guidance that feels natural rather than restrictive. This, he noted, is vital for ensuring that players can effectively enjoy the larger scope of the final chapter.
While the game currently lacks a firm release date, development is ongoing for a simultaneous release across all planned platforms in early 2027. Updates regarding the project, including potential story expansions, remain pending.
