As Square Enix celebrates the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 10, internal production details have surfaced revealing that the game's iconic fantasy setting was a strategic response to the cinematic landscape of the early 2000s. In an interview with Takashi Tokita, series producer Yoshinori Kitase explained that the team originally intended to continue the sci-fi trajectory established by Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8.
The Shift to Fantasy
According to Kitase, the direction changed when the developers identified a growing trend in Hollywood. "During development, we initially took a more sci-fi approach at first, but when we thought about what would be trending in Hollywood around the time of FF10's release, we learned that The Lord of the Rings was in production," Kitase stated. The team pivoted their creative focus, banking on the idea that fantasy would become the next major global trend.
This decision proved timely. Final Fantasy 10, which began development in 1999, launched in 2001—just months before the theatrical releases of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
Eastern Influences and Sci-Fi Roots
While the genre shift defined the game's identity, the production team aimed to differentiate their take on fantasy from standard Western tropes. Kitase noted that writer Kazushige Nojima wanted to move away from the medieval European settings common in the genre, opting instead to draw from Eastern influences.
Despite this move toward fantasy, remnants of the original sci-fi concept remain embedded throughout the final product. Thematically, the game also shares common ground with the fantasy epics that influenced its development; both Yuna’s pilgrimage and Frodo’s journey center on tragic figures forced to carry an immense, world-saving burden that threatens their own survival.
