Following its release on April 28, 2026, the co-op shooter Far Far West has exceeded the expectations of its developer, Evil Raptor. According to developer Arnaud Petit, the studio experienced a stronger reception and higher player counts than anticipated, validating the team's decision to shift the game’s core mechanics during development.

From Prototypes to Full Release

The path to Far Far West was defined by significant iteration. The project moved through three distinct phases before finding its final form. An initial tower defense prototype and a subsequent linear, mission-based structure—reminiscent of Left 4 Dead—failed to meet the team's internal standards. Ultimately, the developers pivoted to focus on a replayable loop centered on satisfying gunplay, humorous spells, and combat combos.

Petit attributes the game's final direction to the studio's creative head, Nicolas, who provided the aesthetic vision for the "spooky and moody" atmosphere. The team actively integrated player feedback from open playtests and a free demo, which Petit credits as a critical factor in the game's successful launch.

The "Electro-Banjo" Philosophy

The game’s distinct soundscape, which features a blend of electronic music and banjo, was a deliberate choice to match the game's rhythm. The soundtrack was composed by the same individual responsible for the score of the studio's previous title, Akimbot. Petit noted that the team prefers not to lock the game into a specific genre, allowing them to maintain creative flexibility for future content updates.

When asked about the design philosophy behind the co-op experience, Petit emphasized a straightforward approach: if an idea is fun for the developers, it is implemented. The team studied the animations of titles like Overwatch to refine the feel of their shooting mechanics, aiming to provide a high-speed, accessible experience that accommodates both casual and hardcore players.

With the game now live on PC, the team at Evil Raptor is currently focused on developing additional content for the player base.
