The modding group known as the Fallout 4: Capital Wasteland Team has announced that it will continue working on its long-term project to rebuild Fallout 3 within the Fallout 4 engine. This confirmation comes despite the recent news that Bethesda Game Studios is currently developing official remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Project Status and Community Commitment

In a statement released on July 19, 2026, the team expressed enthusiasm for Bethesda's official projects, noting that they are excited to see what the studio has in store. However, they provided clear reassurance to their community regarding the future of their own efforts. The team emphasized that the Capital Wasteland mod has been a "community-driven passion project" for nearly a decade and that they remain committed to completing their work.

An Independent Effort

The team explicitly stated that their project is entirely separate from Bethesda Game Studios. While the official remasters are on the horizon, the modders intend to see their own creative vision through to the end. The development team consists of dozens of contributors, though they noted that progress remains slow due to the scale of the undertaking.

Given the decade of development time already invested, it remains likely that the official Bethesda titles will reach players before the full mod reaches completion. Despite the overlap in subject matter, the team has previously indicated that the Capital Wasteland project offers a distinct experience compared to a standard remaster.
