Electronic Arts' long-running fantasy RPG series Dragon Age likely will not return, according to former BioWare figures. Following the commercial underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, publisher EA shifted focus away from the franchise and restructured BioWare, leaving the future of the series in serious doubt.

Why Former Developers Say Dragon Age Is Dormant
Mark Darrah, the executive producer on the series from Dragon Age: Origins through Inquisition, stated in an interview with FRVR that pitching a new game inside EA is extraordinarily difficult due to the company's approach to shipping games. Darrah described EA as "a hedge fund with a videogame hobby that it wished it didn't spend so much money on," adding that due to a frightening number of dormant properties, he sees no path forward for a new entry.
Darrah also pointed to internal corporate hurdles. Attempting to use existing intellectual property triggers competing internal oversight, where multiple groups claim control and complicate development. Even if an outside developer attempted a pitch, Darrah suspects internal BioWare staff would actively block it.
Leadership Friction and Future Outlook
Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider offered a similarly bleak assessment in June, noting that EA executives never understood what to do with the property. Gaider stated that even when entries like Dragon Age: Inquisition exceeded expectations, leadership treated the success as a fluke rather than building upon it.
While a new Mass Effect remains in development at BioWare, the broader corporate situation at EA introduces further uncertainty. With an all-but-assured takeover by Saudi Arabia potentially saddling the company with billions in debt, non-essential properties remain at risk of being sidelined permanently.
Player Impact Summary
For players hoping for a continuation of the Dragon Age universe, the outlook from former studio veterans indicates that no new games are currently in development or being planned. While BioWare continues work on Mass Effect, the Dragon Age franchise has been effectively shelved following the sales shortfall of The Veilguard.
