Hell has officially frozen over in DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations, the latest campaign expansion released in 2026. This new chapter follows the Slayer through a merciless purgatory, tasking players with uncovering haunting truths and forging a new path forward alongside a mysterious ally.
New Combat Dynamics and the Chain Spear
The centerpiece of Revelations is the introduction of the Chain Spear. This new weapon is designed to offer a unique combat experience, rewarding players for mastery with increased power and enhanced mobility. To support this, id Software has added specific settings for the weapon, including an empowerment meter display and adjustable input styles for its various abilities.
Players can further tailor their experience with a new "Perfect Dodge Window" setting within the difficulty menu, which adjusts the timing for dodges performed while using the Chain Spear.
Ripatorium 3.0 and Update 4.0
Alongside the expansion, Update 4.0 brings the Ripatorium to version 3.0. This update provides significant quality-of-life improvements for encounter sharing and customization:
- Customization: Players can now save and load their own personal encounter presets.
- Continuous Spawn Mode: A new mode allows for waves of demons to respawn continuously rather than requiring full elimination of a wave.
- Resource Control: New sliders allow for granular control over health and ammo pickups, including options for no pickups, single-use, or 5-minute respawn timers.
- Combat Modifiers: A new Berserk slider and BFC ammo slider allow for further flexibility in how encounters are played.
Balance Adjustments and Technical Fixes
Update 4.0 also addresses several gameplay balance concerns. The Dreadmace has seen a reduction in direct hit damage against Superheavy demons, while the Flail now provides increased armor drops when using the Ignite and Engulf upgrades. Additionally, various enemy AI behaviors have been tuned, including improved aggression for Barons and a new knockback wing attack for the Cyberdemon.
For PC players, the update introduces support for dynamic resolution scaling across DLSS, FSR, and XeSS. The game has also been upgraded to DLSS 4.5, which includes support for 5x and 6x Frame Generation on compatible hardware.
Those encountering issues with the new content—such as the "??" input labels appearing during the Chain Spear tutorial—are advised to reset their key binds to default or manually map the new Chain Spear section in the settings menu. If you are experiencing crashes, ensure you are using the latest drivers, specifically NVIDIA 610.74 or AMD Adrenalin 22.6.1 or later.
