The Death Awakening season for Diablo 4 kicked off on June 30, bringing with it a major rework to the game's rarest loot. While Blizzard attempted to address community feedback by introducing "Iconic" Mythics—items that now feature two guaranteed powers to replace the previous system of completely random rolls—a new, significant point of contention has emerged: the drop rates.
Despite the changes meant to improve item synergy, players are finding that obtaining these elusive upgrades is proving to be a monumental task. The frustration is best exemplified by a recent, exhaustive study from Diablo 4 content creator wudijo. In a 20-minute breakdown of his experience, wudijo detailed a 20-hour, non-stop farming session focused solely on lair bosses in an attempt to secure an Iconic Mythic, specifically the El'Druin Sword of Justice.
The Grind for Iconic Mythics
Wudijo’s methodology was straightforward but intense. Over two full days of gameplay, he focused exclusively on Helltides. By the end of his session, he had accumulated 850 lair keys, 900 greater lair keys, and 127 superior lair keys. While this effort resulted in over 100 standard Mythics, five Mythic Seals, and more than five billion gold, he failed to see a single Iconic Mythic drop.
"I just don't have that item, with all of my effort with all of the crafting, with all of the Sparks, and all of these lair bosses... so this is what happened here, and I am very sad," wudijo noted in his video. While he acknowledged that the current loop is effective for gathering regular Mythics and Seals, he concluded that the hunt for specific Iconic items is "definitely kind of disappointing."
Diminishing Returns on Power
The issue is compounded by the fact that by the time a player might realistically see an Iconic Mythic drop, they have often already acquired high-end standard Uniques that outperform the Mythic versions. Wudijo highlighted the example of the Unique Eaglehorn bow; by the time he finally encountered a Mythic version, it possessed two sub-optimal stats. Because the reworked loot system limits players to re-rolling only one power, his hard-earned Mythic item was rendered less effective than his existing gear and was ultimately sent to the blacksmith for salvage.
This sentiment has resonated across the community. A heavily upvoted thread on Reddit has characterized the current drop rates as "broken," with many players questioning the accessibility of these items in a seasonal format that lasts only three months. While the allure of ultra-rare loot is a staple of the ARPG genre, the current imbalance between the effort required and the actual utility of the drops has left many dedicated players frustrated with Diablo 4’s latest update.
As of now, it remains to be seen if Blizzard will adjust the drop tables or the crafting limitations associated with these items. For the latest on the Death Awakening season, keep an eye on our Game Updates section.
