Warren Spector, the director of Deus Ex and a foundational figure in the immersive sim genre, has announced his retirement from game development. In a statement posted to LinkedIn, Spector indicated that after 44 years in the industry, he intends to focus on writing, lecturing, and consulting.

Spector, whose career spans work on Ultima, System Shock, and the Thief series, noted that his decision is driven by a combination of age and health factors. He also pointed to the changing nature of the game business, stating that it is "just not as much fun for me anymore."

Future Projects and Industry Outlook

Despite his retirement, Spector did not close the door entirely on future game design. He revealed he has three specific projects in mind—one "very big," one "very small," and one that he currently does not know how to make—that he would consider pursuing if the circumstances were right.

Looking back on his career, which included leading teams at Ion Storm and Looking Glass Studios, Spector expressed satisfaction with his contributions to the medium. "Some of those games are still being played 15...20...30 years later," he wrote. Regarding the next generation of developers, he added, "Your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed."

Recent Professional History

Spector’s more recent work involved consulting for OtherSide Entertainment. This period included the 2018 release of Underworld Ascendant and the 2026 launch of the stealth game Thick As Thieves. Following the release of Thick As Thieves, which received mixed reviews, OtherSide Entertainment underwent staff layoffs and canceled a multiplayer immersive sim titled Argos: Riders on the Storm.
