Campaign Settings and the Rogue Task Force 141
The single-player campaign picks up after the events of Modern Warfare 3. Captain Price goes rogue, completing missions on his own terms and drawing friction from both the United States government and his former Task Force 141 allies. Alongside Price's unauthorized operations, a new Korean conflict threatens to engulf the world, split across three narrative fronts in North Korea, South Korea, and Price's unit. Grigsby confirmed that these three storylines eventually converge into a grand finale.
Levels span diverse locales including Russia, Korea, and New York City. The campaign also features an open-world map where South Korean forces find themselves trapped behind enemy lines in North Korea. To ensure authenticity, the development team hired South Korean advisors to guide dialect, culture, and casting.
Return to Big War and Revamped DMZ
Modern Warfare 4 moves away from the strictly smaller special forces focus of recent franchise entries to embrace full-on war sequences. Grigsby estimates that about half of the experience consists of large-scale war levels, balanced against tactical special operations.
Meanwhile, the extraction-focused DMZ mode transitions from its original beta iteration in Warzone during the Modern Warfare 2 era into a fully enclosed experience native to Modern Warfare 4. Serving as a narrative aftermath to the campaign, the new DMZ features free-roam elements, dynamic operations, story missions, and boss encounters. It takes place on a new map named Hajin, which spans South Korea, North Korea, and Russia, though the Russian portion arrives in later seasons. The mode also implements dynamic weather systems where elements like rain wash away footprints and fog obstructs visibility.
Studio Dynamics
Addressing the historical rivalry between Infinity Ward and Treyarch, Grigsby noted that both teams maintain open communication now that they share the same game engine. Studios exchange ideas to coordinate development efforts and prevent duplicate mechanics, reflecting a collaborative shift from past decades of competition.
