The long-running Terraria modification, Calamity, has officially ceased development. The project, which had grown to effectively double the content of the base sandbox game over the last decade, has been shut down by its remaining team members.
Reasons for the Shutdown
The decision to end the project follows a series of staffing controversies, most notably misconduct allegations directed at current lead developer Ozzatron regarding the presence of minors in an NSFW Discord server. This follows a previous leadership transition last year, when former lead developer Fabsolin was replaced due to similar accusations.
In a statement released on the official Calamity Discord, the remaining team members declared the project’s reputation "irrecoverably tainted." Beyond the controversy, the team cited a significant loss of personnel and resources, noting that many contributors have departed and requested the removal of their assets from the mod.
Current Development Roadblocks
The shutdown process remains complicated due to internal control disputes:
- Website Access: The development team reports that Ozzatron has blocked other members from editing the official Calamity website.
- Repository Control: Ozzatron currently retains control over the mod's GitHub repository.
- Compensation: Requests for compensation from the team have reportedly been ignored.
While the Calamity mod will receive no further official updates, the team has encouraged fans to support their future, unrelated projects. Players can continue to explore the base Terraria game, developed by Re-Logic, as well as other community-made mods inspired by Calamity's legacy.
