The Bottles game manager has received a major update to version 66, bringing significant backend changes designed to streamline how Windows software runs on Linux. Released on August 12, 2026, this update integrates UMU (Unified Linux Wine Game Launcher) from Open Wine Components, providing users with a toolset similar to Valve’s Steam Linux Runtime, but functional outside of the Steam environment.
New Technical Features
Alongside UMU integration, the developers have introduced "ProtoSoda," a custom version of Wine/Proton designed to work specifically with the new UMU implementation. This update also marks the introduction of "Adaptive Launch" for the Soda runner (version 11.0-5 or newer).
- Adaptive Launch: By creating a local profile of the files a program accesses during its initial startup, Bottles can pre-load these files for future launches. This is intended to decrease the time required for a program to reach its first window.
- Bottles Legacy: The development team confirmed that current iterations of the software are now being referred to as Bottles Legacy, while work on the next-generation version of the manager continues.
- Package Testing: The team is also currently testing a new package format referred to as "cpak."
The developers noted that Adaptive Launch does not modify game configurations or guarantee frame rate increases; it is strictly an optimization for the application loading process. Because of the technical requirements for building these profiles, the feature is only available when using Soda-11.0-5 or newer.
