Blizzard is evaluating the future of the archaeology profession in World of Warcraft, signaling a potential return for the long-dormant secondary skill. During a recent Q&A session in the official WoW Portal Room Discord, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas addressed the current state of the game’s secondary professions.

While archaeology remains accessible for players to complete legacy content, it has not received significant updates since the Shadowlands expansion. The profession effectively ceased receiving new content during the Battle for Azeroth era, over five years ago.

Potential Changes for Future Updates

Hazzikostas acknowledged that several secondary professions are currently "overdue for a closer look." Regarding archaeology specifically, the development team is exploring ways to revitalize the system.

"We would love to look at ways of delivering that fantasy of researching and uncovering bits of data and ancient relics from lost civilizations in a way that maybe is more fun in a moment-to-moment sense," Hazzikostas explained. He noted that while the lore and rewards associated with the profession remain valuable to the game's identity, the previous iteration struggled to maintain player engagement due to its repetitive gameplay loop.

Looking Ahead

Although there is no concrete announcement regarding a specific patch or expansion for these changes, Hazzikostas confirmed that the team is actively discussing potential improvements for the future, specifically mentioning the Last Titan project as a focus for these design conversations.

For now, players looking to engage with the profession are limited to existing content from previous expansions, as the developers continue to evaluate how to balance the thematic appeal of archaeology with more refined, interactive mechanics.
