Mega Cat Studios has detailed its upcoming development plans for Backyard Baseball on PC, highlighting key updates aimed at improving controls, core gameplay, and league immersion following community feedback.

Quick Facts

  • Platform: PC (via Steam)
  • Developer: Mega Cat Studios
  • Focus areas: Mouse and keyboard defense, pitching and batting feel, and league stats

Gameplay and Control Adjustments

After two weeks of patches and hot fixes addressing early bugs, the team has outlined four main priorities based on gameplay data and player feedback. The primary focus is bringing keyboard and mouse controls into parity with controllers, specifically during defensive plays.

Mouse responsiveness has been updated so that fielders react more fluidly to player input. Additionally, the select indicator now appears only when hovering directly over a player during defensive mouse play, clarifying who is under player control. Baserunners have also received smarter routing logic, committing more confidently to the next base when close rather than retreating immediately when targeted by the defense.

Pitching, Batting, and League Updates

The developer is reworking hitting and pitching mechanics to address player feedback regarding predictable batting reticles and pitch reward systems. Two swing spot styles are currently in testing: a "Modern" style update and a "Classic" style option that borrows attributes from early versions of Backyard Baseball.

League mode is receiving expanded statistics and presentation upgrades. New additions include a League Leaders screen, the ability to view opponent strategy menus and lineups, team-by-team season stats accessible via team logos, and a Backyard News popup for world-building and game results. HUD elements now display fielding positions and batting averages directly on player portraits, while pause menus feature enhanced lineup breakdowns highlighting MVPs, base stealers, and home run hitters. Randomized day and night start times have also been added to league play.

Quality of Life Additions

Players can now toggle features such as fireworks, batting stances, and distance counters on or off. Other additions include color matching accessibility settings, pitcher swap alerts, and strategy screen highlights that track whether players are overperforming or underperforming relative to their published stats.
