ChangedSTDB 1.12 -> 2.10 UpgradeThis is mostly changing things under the hood, with no player facing changes, which will allow up to take advantage of optimisations and new features in the futureWe did need to re-write a lot of the game client due to a change in how data is sent to clients from STDB 2.0. If you notice anything behaving differently, especially relating to how your client reacts to things (e.g. damage numbers, animations, UI not updating) please let us know at BitCraft SupportDoing bulk item conversion now combines into a single action which should solve many issues that were stemming from client server synchronisationUpdated the duration of several pies that were missed in the previous deluxe food duration passAdded a panel behind the title screen announcements to make them easier to readFixed an issue that was causing T1-3 Trees to double respawn when interacting with withered saplingsT1 Trees no longer have withered saplings and will always respawn locally after a set timeT2-3 Trees will no longer respawn locally automatically, you must interact with the withered sapling if you want to ensure they respawn locally, otherwise the global respawner will respawn them globallyWe are looking into ways to let players replant trees if they are depleted locally to regrow forestsWe are also looking at a way to target some other areas that were worst affected by this issue causing the tree density to get very high and cause performance issues. We are investigating an approach that will target just these areas and not have a negative impact on unaffected areas.FixedFixed a warning spamming due to other player’s hidden deployablesFixed an issue where players would sometimes attack twice in a rowFixed the facial cosmetics not working in the Hexite Exchange try-on previewFixed a case in the traveler task ui where the wrong colour text was being used in dark modeFixed a performance issue in the item discovery code that could cause lag spikes on massive crafts being claimedFixed an exception when rendering the map before wind data has loaded

Added:Foraging Rework/AdditionsAdded giant berry bush events. A few giant withering berry bushes have been added to the world. Players can treat the berry bushes with the nearby water springs to make them harvestable. Harvestable Giant Berry Bushes have unlimited health and last for a moderate amount of time allowing players to harvest more passively for a time. When they expire, they turn into a Citric Giant Berry bush for 30 seconds which has an increased chance to yield citric berries and provides a high amount of experience. After 30 seconds, it turns back into a withering bush and must be treated again. These currently exist for tier 1-3 but more will be added in the futureMushrooms are now unidentified when found and must be identified at the foraging workbench. Mushrooms can identify into the current mushrooms, reckless mushrooms, energizing mushrooms or, very rarely, berserker mushrooms after tier 2Reckless mushrooms - Poisonous mushrooms that can be eaten. Gives a powerful buff but also a massive debuff to your stamina. You can cure the negative debuff while keeping the positive buff by making and drinking an antidote out of a gathering potion + an energizing mushroomEnergizing Mushrooms - Can be used to make the antidote for the negative effects of the reckless mushroom, allowing you to keep the positive effect with no consequence. Also can just instantly restore stamina instantly when eaten.Gypsite Pits can now spawn from depleted sand piles. Gypsite pits have unlimited health and can be harvested by any number of players for a short time until they disappear. Gypsite pits have a much higher chance to yield gypsite than regular sand or clay.Mud Pit Dungeons. Clay can spawn mud dungeons when fully harvested which will collapse after 2 minutes. Once it collapses, the dungeon disappears. These dungeons have resources which yield a high amount of various foraging materials which can be harvested by any number of players while the dungeon lasts.Added a new quest to better introduce players to planting fertile trees through the Forestry professionAdded a quest to unlock the Equous (II) unlocked at level 28 Taming, which unlocks a larger inventory and storage for your equousAdded several new charms and instruments for foraging and one for both carpentry and masonryChangedAll deployables now deploy (and collect) in 1s up from 3sAdded a Search bar to the Abilities WindowFixedWe fixed an issue that caused players to incorrectly have their Equous (I) mount called Equous (III)Fixed over a dozen of the most common errors and exceptions that could cause issues when playingRemovedAs planned from the release of the Uncharted Islands Regions, they have been removed from the game. Patch Notes - Forestry Profession Overhaul, New Equous Mount, Level-up Stats!
Read captured notes
Added:Forestry OverhaulAll trees now have a chance to drop stashes on the ground while harvesting them. These stashes instantly regenerate 30 stamina and provide a forestry buff. Additionally, the stashes can chain into other stashes which provide wood, resin and have a chance to drop a new charm.Trees have a chance to drop a fertile seed on the ground. Once looted, the fertile seed can be planted and will grow into a tree in 20 minutes. The tree gives more wood yield and higher experience. The tree can also be left for 8 hours which will make it grow into a mature tree with more health. The mature trees are not time efficient for the materials provided compared to the younger trees but are more passiveAdded Hexite Infused Trees. Hexite infused trees provide more experience and loot than regular trees. Additionally, once chopped, they leave behind a stump which can be harvested for very high experience and wood yield. This stump ignores damage and decays after 30 seconds, allowing you to harvest it as a group. The stump periodically debuffs you but the debuff can be cleared with a new forestry ability called “Break the Roots”. Break the Roots has no cooldown but costs staminaAdded 2 new forestry abilities - Break the Roots and Hewing Strikes. Break the Roots is used in the Hexite Stump minigame to clear the debuff and Hewing Strikes provide forestry speed.Added several new forestry charms and instrumentsSailing Mini OverhaulSailing flotsam resources now convert into an open version of themselves when interacted with. The open resource can be looted by an unlimited number of players for a short period of time. This means that players can easily gather sailing resources as a group, similar to the uncharted shipments. Also added some rare drops to the sailing resources.Added a Mining Quest to introduce the player to quarries and rich vein prospectingAdded a new drop to the sentinel - Energy Crystal FragmentsCollect enough Energy Crystal Fragments and you can craft new trinkets at the heart workstation4 new trinkets are available. Update on disconnections and server stability
Read captured notes
Update on disconnections and server stability We have been investigating specific disconnection and server stability events over the last few months. I want to give a summary of what we did, what we have found so far, and what is still outstanding. This is a bit of a technical write-up but I hope it’s still accessible to most of you. Let me start by saying that networking problems are notoriously difficult to debug, and have caused many developers many headaches over the years (myself included). We’ve looked at this issue many times in the past, and have given up at one point or another due to other issues becoming a higher priority. However, a couple of months ago we started our investigation again, with the express goal of not stopping until we got to the bottom of it. We started by adding several new metrics on our backend host to get more information on the different reasons why a connection is terminated, as seen from the server. At the same time I increased our idle timeout from 30s to 5 minutes. This timeout is used to determine how long to wait after sending a ping to a client (this is just a message that means ‘hey are you still there? ’) to get a pong (‘I am still here’) response. The reason this timeout exists is that a client may close their connection “ungracefully” (e. g. the game crashes or a PC loses power), and connections are a limited resource for the server, so they can’t be kept around forever. We believe that this timeout increase did help certain players on slower internet speeds, and particularly those on connections that had poor routing to our server. To explain a bit more, even if you generally have fast internet, it can be that the route your ISP takes to our server is particularly lossy. Because we use websockets (and therefore TCP), a lossy route behaves much like a slow connection. Time of day matters here as well, since your connection may be congested or throttled during periods of high traffic. This timeout was particularly easy to hit during the loading screen because initial data (e. g. resources, buildings, other players etc. ) was sent down with interleaved ping messages. If a ping was preceded by a particularly large update, a client would have to first download the previous message off the wire before it could acknowledge the ping. The increased timeout was also accompanied by a logic change in the idle timeout extension. Whenever any data (not specifically pong responses) is received by the server, the idle timeout is extended. This meant that even if the client was busy downloading a large message, it could still send its own heartbeat message to indicate that it was still alive. This seemed to address a subset of the issues that had been reported. However, we also had another problem: mass disconnects, where 50 or more players would all disconnect at the same time without a clear reason why. The extended timeout and idle timeout logic change didn’t make a difference for these disconnects, and we continued to see them after the previous change was rolled out. As it turned out, the change actually made things worse for the players caught in them. It left the underlying cause completely untouched, but it meant that an affected player now got disconnected twice within a few minutes instead of once. Why that happened took us a while to work out, and it is what the rest of this section is about. The next time such a mass disconnect event happened we had new data to look at in our dashboards, and we noticed something interesting: the disconnects that were happening in bulk looked like this: I had looked at the graph for the number of connected clients many times before during disconnection events, and it always looked like a spike down. I had never seen this pattern of a spike up followed by a spike down. On top of that, the disconnection by cause metrics were showing a spike in idle_timeout. It was a bit of a puzzler, and it took me some deep digging in our logs to figure this one out. What happened with this particular spike is that at around 8:47, roughly 50 clients detected a network error on the client side. We don’t have the client side logs, but from the server logs this must be what happened. The websocket library we use on the client side most likely threw an error because it detected that it was no longer connected to the server. A websocket connection can break in a few different ways, for example the operating system can hand an error straight back to the app because it gave up after retransmitting the same packet too many times and reported the connection as dead. The network interface itself can also change or disappear underneath the game, which happens when Wi-Fi drops for example. The fact that around 50 clients hit this at the same moment implies a shared upstream problem rather than 50 unrelated local problems. The BitCraft client has an automatic reconnect loop if its connection to the server is lost, and so all the disconnected clients open new connections to the server. The server accepts these new connections but keeps the old ones around. Importantly, they are kept now for a full 5 minutes after our timeout change. This is why we have this period of time in which we have more connected clients than players. Some of them have two connections open. After the 5 minute idle timeout expires, the server closes the old stale connection. The new one is fine, but when a connection is closed the server notifies the BitCraft module code, which assumes that the client has logged out. We weren’t tracking connections in the BitCraft module, so when the old stale connection is closed, we only check which player it is tied to and not whether that player has a second connection open. The player is then marked as signed out. Normally this event is never received by the signed out player, after all, they should have no connection open to the server. But in this case they receive an update about being signed out on the second connection. This is an unexpected case on the client, and it surfaces an error to the player telling them they have been signed out and that the server may be under maintenance. The client then also closes the open connection and the player is forced to go back to the login screen. This is the spike down in the graph: it is both the closing of the stale connections and the resulting closing of the valid connections by the clients. We have now made changes to track connections in the BitCraft module code, and only mark a player as signed out if the connection that is closed is the most recent one that was opened, which means that the second signout should stop happening. Interestingly, the old 30 second timeout was short enough that the server would close the stale connection well before the client noticed anything was wrong and reconnected, so the two connections never overlapped and this bug in our module code was avoided. Raising the timeout to 5 minutes is what now caused the double disconnect. The underlying event, 50 clients losing their connection at the same moment, was happening before the change as it just showed up as a plain spike down, instead of a spike up followed by a spike down. The fact that this network error wasn’t visible to our backend server made us suspect that our cloud provider may have some transient networking issue which could cause the dropped connections. This gave us a lot of hope, as there was finally a possible explanation and solution to this problem. Unfortunately this maintenance window (which was on August 5th) has come and gone, and we have still seen disconnection spikes since. This is where we are today: we are still not sure what error these 50 or so clients experience during these disconnection events. The next update that goes out will add client side reporting of disconnection errors to a server that is hosted in a different data center than the game server. The idea is that if a client gets a network error, it reports that error to this separate server. The errors are queued and sent once a connection is established, for cases where the client is disconnected from the internet entirely. Hopefully this will give us a full picture of what is happening. A few things that might be going on are:Some other networking problem with our cloud provider which wasn’t addressed by their maintenanceSome node on a specific network route to our server having a transient errorAn issue with an ISPHowever, we won’t be sure what it is until we have the client side reporting in place and are able to tie a reported disconnection error to a mass disconnect event. Regardless, the solution will be to build a more seamless auto-reconnect on the client so that when a networking error happens the clients can reconnect and at most experience a short lag. This is something that is being worked on already in parallel to the investigation and will solve this regardless of what the underlying issue is. We understand that this issue is frustrating for our players, it is for us as well, and it is not being ignored. Additionally, we are looking into other potential causes of client side issues (like memory pressure or memory leaks) that might cause worsening performance or disconnects. We appreciate your patience. - Alessandro
Patch Notes - Mining Profession Overhaul, Fishing Updates, BugFixes and More!

Added:Mining Profession OverhaulAdded mining quarry for Tier 1-3 (more will be added in future updates). Mining quarries are a stationary area in the world. Quarries have rocks that cycle between being normal and glittering. Mine the glittering rocks for better loot and exp. Additionally, the mining quarries have a large quarry rock which becomes active every 30-45 minutes. Fully mine the cracked large rock before the timer expires to gain access to an even better rock node that provides higher exp, a chance at braxite and rock chunk drops as well as a small buff that grants mining power for a moderate duration (duration depends on the tier of the quarry rock).Added calcic ore. Calcic ore is a Tier 1 precious metal which can be used to make a ring that gives cart speed. More uses to come in the future. Calcic ore is acquired through prospecting similar to the other precious metal.Added “Heavy Swing”. Heavy swing is a mining ability unlocked at level 5. Heavy swing gives +8 mining power for a moderate duration but costs stamina. It is especially useful for resources with limited times or hits like prospecting or quarries. Magnetic rocks can now spawn as placeables when mining stone boulders. After collecting them, magnetic rocks allow the player to do a very short (single step) prospecting run which gives a high amount of exp and more ore drops Added sift collectors. Sift collectors can be placed in the water to collect river muck which can be processed at a mining work station. River muck yields sand with a chance to yield ore, precious metal nuggets or other various loot! Geode cargos no longer drop from boulders or ore veins. Instead, geodes can pop off of rocks as “placeables” which can be harvested for a gem as well as a bunch of expFishing Profession Overhaul ContinuedAdded a Quest for introducing trophy fishing The largest trophy fish of each tier now gives a one time knowledge unlock which grants stats. These spots give more EXP and fish than the typical lakefish schoolsLakefish schools (unlocked from lvl 3, repeats every tier) - Lakefish schools are now baited upfront and last a period of time (creating an experience more like ocean fishing) making them more communal and low intensity. Perfect for relaxing fishing in the lakes and rivers with friends.Lakefish netting (unlocked from lvl 14, repeats every tier) - A passive, solo gameplay loop designed to be layered with other activities above. Lay out your nets in a loop and boat around to collect extra fish from your nets every so oftenOcean Fishing (unlocked from lvl 17, repeats every tier) - Mostly unchanged (most co-op, idle activity), but we’ve added “One that got away” fish which can spawn while ocean fishing that can be quickly caught if you target them in time, each time you catch one you have a chance to spawn an even rarer one, allowing them to be chained if you are lucky and paying attention. These primarily give extra EXP and can be butchered in your inventory to avoid taking up a ton of space.Lobster Fishing (unlocked from lvl 28, repeats every tier) - A more passive form of lake netting, but for the ocean. Layout a loop of traps and refill them with bait daily to get extra crushed shells and lobster meat, which can be used for new consumables.Trophy Fishing (unlocked from lvl 29, repeats every tier) - The most active gameplay for fishing involves tracking down and trying to land a trophy fish. This is a solo activity where you are racing against the clock to tire the fish out to catch the biggest one possible. Use abilities quickly to cancel out debuffs which will prevent you from landing a bigger fish if left unchecked. Trophy Fish can be butchered at a station to get filets and oil, or butchered in your inventory for a chance at chum to keep your trophy fish trip going as long as possible. Gives best in class EXP rates.Added 2 new Abilities to Fishing (primarily used in Trophy fishing but offer some benefits when used during other activities)“Reel In” (unlocked at lvl 5) - gives a small boost of fishing speed, clears the “It's Getting Away” debuff when trophy fishing“Let it run” (unlocked at lvl 7) gives a small boost of fishing power at the cost of lowered gathering/crafting speed, clears the “Snapping The Line” debuff when trophy fishingAdded several new Rewards for FishingAdded several new quests which walkthrough the new activities and give decent chunks of EXP to help you process through Tier 1 smoothlyAdded 3 new Fishing Equipment items which are rewarded from the quests as well as the knowledge to re-craft them and wear themAdded new Fishing Potion which can be mixed in your inventory with Gathering Potions and Lobster meat of the same tier as a direct upgrade to the gathering potion focused on fishingFuture Planned Changes:Continued balance of drops and EXP from player feedbackMore rewards (fishing equipment, stat giving knowledge, consumables)More quests (lobster and trophy fishing)More variety of fish models (“One that got away”, lakefish)More distinct / clearer icons for some itemsProfession Equipment SlotsAdded support for profession equipment to go into new slots next to your tools. We plan to add more sophisticated functionality to these equipment in the future (e.g. unlocking abilities or giving more unique effects). Currently only the 3 for fishing have been added, more will coming in future updates. Permanent Content AdditionsAdded Packed Ice which drops Ice Slush which is used to make popsiclesAdded Oysters Shells which can be opened to Collect oyster meat and rarely pearlsChangedWeekly Tasks - The tasks system now resets weekly, instead of 4 tasks per 4 hours, players can now complete 50 tasks per week (Per-NPC) (subject to balance, we found the vast majority of players complete less than this) Completing a task uses one task allocation, you can also re-roll a task costing 2 tasks.Resource and other trackers now show in unexplored chunksBackground mode now can show the Game HUD UI which allows for better clarity on action progress or other informationPlaceable item tooltips now show the biomes, min distance between and max amount placedFixedFixed a bug where the inventory setting menu was hard to open due to the center of the button not being clickableFixed a bug where toggling inventory setting “Fill deployables first” would toggle off other unrelated settingsFixed placeables spawning inside resources on walkable tiles of their footprintsFixes an issue where buff stats would remain after expiration when relogging during its durationFixed a handful of issues with placeablesFixed it so you can no longer place/interact while swimmingFixed place/interact animations while mountedFixed it so you can place while mountedFixed swimming after place/interact while in a boatFixed placeable interact not looping while in a deployableFixed “You were signed out.
