Bandai Namco has released a detailed breakdown of the features arriving in Tales of Eternia Remastered, which is set to launch on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 this October. The developer’s latest update for the Japanese market reveals a comprehensive list of quality-of-life improvements, technical adjustments, and new gameplay options designed to modernize the classic RPG experience.
Quick Facts
- Release Window: October 2026
- Platforms: Nintendo Switch, Switch 2
- New Graphics Mode: Switch between 'Remastered' and 'Original' visuals
- Combat: New 'Battle Retry' function and 'Mania' difficulty available from the start
Navigation and Quality-of-Life Updates
The remaster introduces several visual aids to help players track objectives. Main scenario destinations are now marked with a yellow "!" icon, while valuable items like encyclopedias and maps appear with a "★" icon. Timed events are flagged with an hourglass icon, and blue "!" icons indicate where players can learn new skills or techniques. All of these icons include a distance indicator to the target location and can be toggled on or off in the Custom menu.
Other utility features include:
- Boost Function: A toggleable setting to help the game progress more smoothly.
- Autosave: Automatically triggers after events or when moving to new map areas.
- Quick Recovery: A menu option to heal party HP and status ailments instantly.
- Field Movement: Players can now move at high speeds on the field by holding a button, with an option to set this as the default movement method.
Combat and Gameplay Adjustments
The combat system has received significant tweaks to lower the barrier to entry and increase accessibility. If a player loses a regular battle, they can now select "Battle Retry" from the Game Over screen to attempt the encounter again immediately. Furthermore, the "Mania" difficulty level is now unlocked from the start of the first playthrough, while the "Unknown" difficulty level is available starting from the second playthrough.
Additional battle-focused changes include:
- High-Speed Auto: Combat speed can be increased during "AUTO" mode.
- Skill Highlighting: Newly acquired techniques and skills are now marked in green text.
- Arena Replays: The "All-Time Champion Deciding Match" in the Inferia Arena can be replayed after it has been cleared.
Notably, the release timing for the high-difficulty "Nereid's Labyrinth" dungeon has been moved up; it is now accessible upon reaching the interior of Shizel Castle in the first playthrough, rather than requiring a cleared save file.
Customization and Technical Options
Bandai Namco has added extensive customization options to the "Custom" menu. Players can now remap key bindings for fields, towns, and dungeons, and adjust the master volume, screen brightness, and voice language (English or Japanese). Subtitles have also been added to skit movies, certain mini-games, and post-battle victory lines.
For those interested in the game's presentation, the "Graphics Mode" and "SE Mode" allow users to choose between original and remastered assets. While the UI remains consistent regardless of the chosen graphical mode, players can now use the new "Skit Player" and "Sound Player" tools to revisit previously seen content, including BGM, voice lines, and movie clips.
For players starting a second playthrough, the game now allows for a granular data carry-over system. Users can select specific elements to transfer, such as items, monster encyclopedias, and learned techniques, though character titles will not carry over. Finally, color vision support has been implemented, with dungeon gimmicks and mini-games redesigned to be identifiable through shapes and patterns rather than color alone.
