Stellar Blade Performance Targets Revealed for Nintendo Switch 2
Shift Up has provided new details regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 port of Stellar Blade: Complete Editionconfirming performance targets for frame rate and resolution. The developer aims for a consistent 60 frames per second across both docked and handheld play modes, offering players a fluid gameplay experience.
Regarding visual fidelity, the game is set to render at an upscaled 1080p resolution when the console is docked. For players utilizing the handheld mode, the title will display at an unscaled 720p resolution. These specifications indicate a focus on delivering sharp visuals tailored to each display configuration.
Innovative Tech Combination for Smooth Gameplay
To achieve the ambitious 60 FPS target, Shift Up is employing a combination of advanced rendering technologies. DongKi Lee, CTO and technical director at Shift Up, confirmed the integration of Nvidia’s DLSS for image upscaling. However, as DLSS on Switch 2 does not include frame generation capabilities, the team has ingeniously paired it with AMD’s FSR 3.1 for frame interpolation.
Lee elaborated on this unique approach, explaining that DLSS is utilized first to upscale the image. The resulting output then feeds into FSR 3.1’s frame interpolation feature. This process allows the game to target 60 frames per second. Lee further detailed that the development team established a base of 30 frames per second to ensure even latency for players, subsequently using frame interpolation to reach the desired 60 FPS.
This technical strategy is designed to optimize visual quality and frame rate, providing a responsive and visually appealing experience for players on the new hardware. The combination of these technologies highlights Shift Up's commitment to leveraging the Switch 2's capabilities to its fullest.
Developer Experience with Nintendo Switch 2
Working with the Nintendo Switch 2 has offered unique opportunities for the development team. Lee noted that the console's dual nature, supporting both handheld and docked modes, presented an interesting challenge and a significant advantage. The team focused on finding the right balance to maintain both visual expression and performance consistency across these different modes.
According to Lee, the Switch 2's architecture specifically enabled them to achieve this balance, allowing for a high-quality presentation regardless of how players choose to engage with the game. This adaptability is a core strength of the console, which Shift Up has aimed to fully utilize for Stellar Blade: Complete Edition.
Stellar Blade: Complete Edition is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, promising a technically optimized experience for its debut on the platform.
