Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 will arrive on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026. - Release Date: August 4, 2026
- Storage Requirement: 117.2 GB
- New Job: Bastion (Tank class using 'skyltborg' greatshields)

Evercold Expansion and New Content
The upcoming Evercold expansion took center stage during the Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, where developers showcased a five-minute extended teaser trailer. The reveal highlighted the introduction of the Bastion, a new tank class that utilizes a pair of greatshields referred to as skyltborg.
Alongside the expansion, Square Enix outlined several updates for the broader Final Fantasy 14 ecosystem. These include a new data center system designed to improve connectivity and facilitate more efficient player matching within regions, as well as a collaboration with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy. Additionally, an Evangelion 'Ghosts of Desire' crossover event is currently in the works.
Subscription and Platform Details
Players jumping into the Switch 2 version will need to manage a separate monthly subscription, even if they already maintain an active account on other platforms. However, Square Enix is offering a 50 percent discount on the subscription fee for those playing on the Switch 2. Notably, the game will not require a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership to access the online features.
To assist new players, the popular free trial version will be available on the Switch 2 at launch, providing access to a significant portion of the game's content. Those planning to install the title should ensure they have 117.2 GB of available storage, as noted on the official US eShop listing.
Cancellation of Project Anglerfish
In separate news from the industry, Cyan has officially confirmed the cancellation of its Myst-universe project, Project Anglerfish. In a video titled 'A path not taken,' creative director Eric A. Anderson and development director Hannah Gamiel explained that the prototype, which had been in development for four months over a year ago, was shelved for various reasons. While the team released a teaser trailer as a public send-off, they confirmed that they remain focused on other new games and experiences within the Myst universe.
