Competitive battling in Pokémon Champions requires more than just picking a favorite creature. If you are starting your journey on mobile, use these steps to build a viable team and manage your resources efficiently.

1. Choose the Right Starter Team

You do not pick a single monster; you receive a team of six. Avoid the Absol team and prioritize the Pikachu squad. The Pikachu starter team includes:

  • Kingambit: A bulky attacker that is difficult to remove.
  • Garchomp: A high-output physical attacker.
  • Gyarados: Provides Intimidate to lower opponent attack and offers a crucial Ground-type immunity.
  • Gengar: Excellent for speed and high Special Attack pressure.

2. Complete Battle Tutorials

Navigate to Train > Battle Tutorials to complete all modules. While these provide basic knowledge, the primary objective is the reward payout. You will earn VP, tickets, and Mega Stones, which are essential for recruiting additional Pokémon through the gacha system.

3. Connect to Pokémon Home

Sync your Pokémon Champions account with Pokémon Home to transfer creatures directly. This saves significant amounts of VP, allowing you to reallocate those funds toward training your active roster. Note that transferred Pokémon continue to occupy space in both the Home app and your mobile game.

4. Prioritize Meta-Relevant Pokémon

While you can succeed with non-meta favorites, focusing your recruitment on top-tier threats will simplify your climb through Ranked play. Target these specific Pokémon:

  • Attackers: Sneasler, Basculegion, Aerodactyl, Garchomp, and Mega Charizard Y.
  • Utility & Defense: Whimsicott (for Tailwind control), Kingambit, Gengar, Pelipper, and Incineroar.
  • Special Acquisition: Eternal Flower Floette (requires transfer from Pokémon Legends Z-A via the Infinite Z-A Royale post-game mission).

5. Optimize Stats and Held Items

Under the Train > Pokémon Training menu, you can refine your team's performance:

  • Stat Alignment: Adjust Natures to boost your primary stat while lowering the attack type (Physical or Special) that your Pokémon does not utilize.
  • Stat Points: You have 66 total points to distribute, with a cap of 32 per stat. Focus on maximizing your Pokémon’s core strengths rather than shoring up weak points.
  • Held Items: Always equip a held item. Use Mega Stones if the Pokémon is your designated Mega evolution, or equip Leftovers for tanks and Life Orb for offensive threats.
