Black Jack Studio and HongKong GameTree have provided a first look at the gameplay mechanics for their upcoming title, Langrisser: Sea of Swords. While the game does not yet have an official release date, the developers have confirmed that the project will launch on iOS, Android, and PC via Steam.
Quick Facts
- Combat: Players field two heroes and two troop types simultaneously, with the ability to swap characters during battle.
- Mechanics: Includes Hero Unity Skills, destructible environments, and environmental puzzles.
- Structure: The series is moving away from linear progression in favor of an open-world design.
New Tactical Combat Features
The most significant shift for the series is the transition to a dual-hero combat system. Players will no longer be limited to a single hero and their respective troops. Instead, the game allows for two heroes and two troop types on the field at once. This system is designed to allow for on-the-fly tactical adjustments, as players can switch between their two chosen heroes to adapt to the situation. Certain character pairings will also unlock unique Hero Unity Skills, rewarding players for strategic team composition.
Combat will also interact more directly with the environment. Players can now use destructible terrain to their advantage, such as breaching castle walls to avoid a frontal assault or destroying bridges to eliminate enemy units moving across them. These additions are intended to provide more creative solutions to tactical challenges.
World Design and Exploration
According to the developer's latest updates, Langrisser: Sea of Swords is intended to represent an evolution of the franchise by moving away from its traditional linear progression. The game features an open-world structure, promising more freedom for players to navigate and explore various paths.
To complement this shift in scale, the developers have integrated puzzles into the world. These are designed to break up combat sequences and provide more variety during exploration.
