Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet has provided an update stating that the team has worked on a fix for the bug behind last month's major Xbox outage, and the update has begun rolling out to players.

Quick Facts

  • Platform: Xbox Series X/S and PC scenarios
  • Key Personnel: Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet
  • Rollout Date: Started rolling out August 10, 2026
  • Mandatory Date: Becomes mandatory August 17, 2026

What Caused the Outage?

According to Van Vliet, an underlying service required for Xbox Home Console sharing, Game Pass purchased content, and specific PC scenarios experienced an outage after a system update left certain services unresponsive.

This issue was compounded by a bug in the Xbox client software stack. When the primary service went down, the client bug triggered cascading failures that caused other license checks to fail, preventing some players from launching games and causing library enumeration issues.

The Fix and Next Steps

To prevent future incidents, Xbox is transitioning ownership of the underlying licensing service directly to the Xbox team while engineers harden the services and infrastructure.

The client bug has been resolved in an upcoming release that began rolling out on August 10 and will become mandatory on August 17. The engineering and operations teams are actively looking at additional ways to improve product reliability, with more quality-of-life updates expected in the coming weeks and months.
