Unknown Worlds Entertainment has confirmed that Subnautica 2 has officially surpassed the 5 million unit sales mark. The milestone comes shortly after the title’s early access release on May 14, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store, as well as its inclusion in the Xbox Game Pass library.

The game has seen a rapid sales trajectory since launch. Following its initial arrival, the title moved over one million units within its first hour, reached two million units in 12 hours, and hit four million units in just five days. The latest figures confirm that the title reached the 5 million mark in early June.

First Early Access Update Details

Alongside the sales announcement, Unknown Worlds has deployed the first major update for the game. This patch focuses on refining the early-game experience and expanding core gameplay systems based on player feedback.

A primary addition is the expansion of the Biomod system, which allows players to temporarily gain creature traits. With the addition of two new Biolabs—located in the Coral Gardens and the Axum Ruins—the total number of unlockable Biomods has increased from four to six. Additionally, players can now expand their passive Biomod capacity by utilizing the Bioscanner on specific targets.

Refining Co-op and Survival Mechanics

The update also addresses community feedback regarding the co-op experience. Previously, audio logs would play automatically for all users in a session. These have been updated so that audio logs must now be played manually via the PDA Databank, preventing accidental interruptions for other players.

Exploration and survival mechanics have also received adjustments:

  • Wreck Exploration: Wrecks now feature new routes and oxygen-based puzzles to navigate.
  • Movement: Players can now sprint while outside of the water, including on the surface and within bases.
  • Basebuilding: The update includes better placement options for the Fabricator and Tadpole Dock, alongside a new dedicated storage structure.

Technical improvements regarding creature behavior, user interface elements, and general rendering were also included in this release to further polish the PC and Xbox versions of the title.
