Christopher Barrett, a veteran of Bungie for 25 years, has reached a legal settlement with Sony Interactive Entertainment and Bungie. The agreement resolves a $100 million lawsuit Barrett filed after being fired from the studio, a move he alleged was a tactical breach of contract to avoid paying out over $80 million in bonuses owed following Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of the developer in 2022.
Barrett announced the resolution on July 8, 2026, stating on X that he is “very satisfied” with the outcome. A joint statement from the parties confirmed the litigation has concluded and noted a specific change for the upcoming game Marathon: “Mr. Barrett was the original Game Director for Marathon, and his name has been added to the game’s credits to reflect that.”
Termination and Legal Conflict
The dispute originated in 2024, when Barrett was ousted from Bungie during the development of Marathon. Reports later revealed the termination followed a Sony-led investigation into text messages Barrett sent to female colleagues. At the time of his departure, Barrett issued an apology, stating, “If anyone ever felt that way about their interaction with me, I am truly sorry.”
However, the situation escalated when Barrett sued, characterizing Sony’s investigation as a “sham” designed to strip him of his financial entitlements. Sony responded in February 2025 by releasing examples of the messages in question, including instances where Barrett referred to a female employee as the “Holy Grail” and commented on her attire. Barrett’s legal team argued that these exhibits were “cherry picked” and lacked the full context of the conversations, maintaining that the company had no legitimate legal basis to fire him for cause.
The Future of Bungie
While the financial specifics of the settlement remain undisclosed, the inclusion of Barrett’s name in the Marathon credits serves as a symbolic conclusion to his tenure at the studio, which dates back to his work on 1998’s Myth II: Chimera.
The settlement arrives during a period of significant instability at Bungie. Following the conclusion of Destiny 2, the studio recently underwent major layoffs, with nearly 300 staff members losing their positions. Although the company plans to continue releasing seasonal content for Marathon through the remainder of 2026, the long-term outlook for the developer remains uncertain following the staff reductions.
