As Sony prepares to phase out disc releases by January 2028, Sega President Wants To reassure physical media collectors that the publisher has no plans to abandon physical game releases. In an interview with Famitsu, Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi addressed the industry's digital push, emphasizing that the company intends to keep producing physical software alongside its digital strategies.

Quick Facts

  • PlayStation Disc Timeline: Sony plans to end physical disc releases starting in January 2028.
  • Sega's Position: Sega President Shuji Utsumi confirmed the studio intends to maintain physical game releases alongside digital growth.
  • Distribution Options: Sega has a long history with boutique physical publishers like Limited Run Games for physical distribution.
  • Platform Landscape: Xbox is testing a disc-to-digital conversion feature, while Nintendo uses download-triggering game-key cards.

Sega Reaffirms Support for Physical Media Culture

Speaking to Japanese publication Famitsu (via My Nintendo News), Utsumi cited Sega's history as a former console maker when discussing the publisher's commitment to boxed games. "We were originally a platform provider, and of course, we still value our physical culture," Utsumi said. "Rather than completely abandoning that, we are currently challenging ourselves to shift towards being able to think about and act on the important aspects of digital in parallel."

While Utsumi did not outline specific distribution logistics for PlayStation titles past the early 2028 window, his statement signals that Sega is exploring avenues to keep physical copies available on store shelves. One potential route includes third-party physical distributors. Sega has previously partnered with Limited Run Games, a specialist publisher that could help bring physical editions to PS5 even if standard retail optical discs are phased out by hardware makers.

How Console Makers Are Approaching Physical Media

Different platform holders are taking noticeably distinct approaches to physical media availability as 2028 approaches:

  • PlayStation: Sony plans to stop releasing physical discs in January 2028. With an eventual PS6 launch expected down the line, moving away from built-in optical drives would make digital downloads the primary standard unless a separate entitlement system is introduced.
  • Xbox: Microsoft has not declared an end to physical discs. Instead, Xbox is testing a disc-to-digital feature that provides players who purchase physical copies with an equivalent digital download entitlement.
  • Nintendo: Nintendo maintains physical retail presence using game-key cards. These empty cards contain no full game data on the cartridge itself; inserting them into the console simply triggers a digital download.

Sega was founded on June 3, 1960, and is headquartered in Shinagawa City, Tokyo. Led by CEO Hajime Satomi, the publisher oversees internal development studios and subsidiaries including Sonic Team, Rovio, and Relic Entertainment, with active franchises ranging from Sonic the Hedgehog and Phantasy Star to Super Monkey Ball, Like a Dragon, and Persona.
