The high-end collectible is manufactured by Steiff, a German toy-making company founded in the 1800s that is credited with creating the first jointed, factory-made teddy bear. The collaboration ties into Pokemon's ongoing 30th-anniversary celebrations, with the total production run of 1,996 units chosen to honor the year the original games launched.
Buyers who managed to secure one of the initial 350 units receive a plush delivered in a dedicated gift box. Each of those first edition items features a gold-plated Button In Ear trademark on its tail and is individually numbered. It remains unconfirmed whether the numbering system will extend across the entire production run of 1,996 plushes.
Targeting Different Wage Brackets
The luxury plush joins other high-priced items aimed at fans with expendable income, sitting alongside a $650 Lego set and the Pokemon x Tiffany collection. Meanwhile, the franchise continues to offer products geared toward modest budgets, such as Sitting Cuties plushes and smaller Lego sets.
While the initial batch of 350 plushes sold out quickly, Steiff has confirmed that additional opportunities to purchase the remaining inventory will follow.
