Industry veteran Glen Schofield has officially announced his retirement after a 35-year career in the video game industry. Schofield shared the news in a video posted to LinkedIn, marking the end of a tenure that saw him contribute to some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming.
A Career in Gaming
Schofield’s career began in 1991, during which time he worked on various licensed titles. Over the following decades, he moved into leadership roles, notably directing games in the Legacy of Kain and Gex series while at Crystal Dynamics. He is perhaps best known for his influential work on the Dead Space and Call of Duty series.
His final project was The Callisto Protocol, a title developed as a spiritual successor to the original Dead Space.
Reflecting on the Industry
In his announcement, Schofield reflected on his time in the industry, noting that he had a "front row seat to one of the greatest creative explosions in history." He expressed gratitude for the opportunities provided by major publishers throughout his career.
"To EA, thank you for letting me make Dead Space, Activision, you gave me the keys to three Call of Duty games, and I really appreciate your trust," said Schofield.
Addressing the current state of the industry, Schofield acknowledged that "times are tough right now," but maintained a positive outlook for the future. He concluded his message by offering encouragement to the next generation of game developers.
"It's time for me to officially retire from the day-to-day work," Schofield stated. "This is an amazing industry, with so many talented people... I wish you all, the next generation of game makers, the best of luck."
