Diablo 4's latest season, Death Awakening, kicked off on June 30 with a major focus on fixing the game's rarest loot. Blizzard introduced a new system for "Iconic" Mythics, replacing the controversial, completely random rolls from the PTR with two guaranteed powers that synergize with each item’s unique abilities. However, while the rework aimed to restore community goodwill, a new pain point has emerged: the drop rates are proving to be exceptionally stingy.

The Cost of Farming Iconic Mythics

Content creator wudijo recently released a 20-minute video documenting his exhaustive attempt to hunt for these items. Over the course of two full real-world days, he spent 20 hours farming bosses in Helltides without taking breaks. The sheer volume of his effort was immense: he accumulated 850 lair keys, 900 greater lair keys, and 127 superior lair keys.

Despite this massive time investment, the results were underwhelming. While his farming netted over 100 regular Mythics, five Mythic Seals, and more than five billion gold, he failed to secure a single Iconic Mythic, such as the El'Druin Sword of Justice. Even after salvaging the loot he did find to trade for Resplendent Sparks, he was unable to craft the specific item he wanted.

Why Players Are Frustrated

The sentiment among the community is increasingly negative, with a heavily upvoted Reddit thread labeling the current drop rates as "broken." The frustration is compounded by the fact that even when players do manage to land a Mythic version of a Unique item, it isn't always an upgrade.

Wudijo shared an example involving an Eaglehorn bow. By the time he finally found a Mythic version, it possessed two "bad stats." Because the current system only allows players to re-roll one of an item's powers, the Mythic version was actually worse than his standard Unique, forcing him to salvage the rare drop at the blacksmith. As wudijo noted, by the time players have a realistic hope of getting a Mythic version of a build-defining Unique, the item often fails to provide a meaningful improvement.

With Diablo 4 seasons lasting only about three months, the difficulty of obtaining these items has left dedicated players questioning the balance of the new loot system. While there is a case for keeping the rarest items truly "mythical," the current scarcity is making the season's headline feature feel inaccessible to even the most committed members of the community.

Blizzard has yet to respond to the feedback. In the meantime, the studio remains in the spotlight as it navigates wider corporate changes, with reports of 3,200 job cuts at Xbox and ongoing updates regarding the future of the World of Warcraft and Diablo teams.
