Create a Private Room and share its name
At the Welcome Island Shack, use the Private Room mode for a planned group. Start a room, create its name and share that name with your friends so they can join. The official glossary sets the limit at eight people and gives the host responsibility for selecting courses. That makes a Private Room the appropriate starting point when you want to pick a particular DLC course for a group. The Shack contains the private-game mode. [1]
Steps
- Start the Private Room, choose a name and give that name to the people you want to join. [1]
Have the course owner host and select the DLC
For Guest Pass, let the player who owns the desired DLC establish the room and select it. The support article describes the selecting host as the person who has been in the room longest, and says players joining can access the purchased course selected as a Guest Pass. Treat this as a shared multiplayer visit: it gives the guest access to that session’s course without requiring every participant to purchase the same DLC first. [2]
Steps
- Have the DLC owner select the purchased course for the guests joining that room. [2]
Separate a Guest Pass round from collecting the course rewards
A Guest Pass guest can play the shared DLC, but cannot collect its lost balls or participate in its foxhunts. If the group’s goal is a normal round together, the pass serves that task. If your goal is collecting course rewards, that guest access does not include those activities. The glossary defines a foxhunt as the hard-course scavenger hunt that awards a commemorative putter, making this restriction relevant to putter hunting as well as ball collecting. The foxhunt is the course’s putter activity. [1]
Update the Steam game and check the current crossplay boundary
The October 8 release requires the 6.8 update to maintain multiplayer functionality and lists Steam build 6.8-58568. Use that release requirement when preparing the SteamVR game for a group session. The same announcement ends crossplay between Pocket Edition and the VR versions, leaving the iOS app frozen at 6.3. An older FAQ saying Pocket Edition can join VR players therefore does not describe the current crossplay boundary. The listed Steam build is 6.8-58568. The mobile-to-VR boundary changed in this release. [3]
Use current host moderation and friend invitations
As of 6.8, a Private Room host can kick a player and bar that player from re-entry. Blocking a player as host prevents them joining any of the host’s Private Rooms. These newer release rules supersede the February support article’s older statement that blocking only limits interaction. Use the current host controls when handling an unwanted participant. For planned exclusive games, support also recommends direct invitations through the friends system, which can start rounds without sharing a room code. [3] [2]
