Valheim: How Achievement Unlocks Work in an Existing 1.0 World

Repeat qualifying actions after 1.0 and distinguish temporary cheated-item restrictions from permanent save flags.

Continue an old save with the new tracking rules in mind

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Valheim 1.0 supports continuing existing saves. Iron Gate recommends a fresh start for the overall experience, but says old saves remain available. Achievements begin tracking statistics only from the moment 1.0 is downloaded, so an old world does not automatically receive every achievement for its previous history. [1]

Steps

  1. Continue the old character and world if desired, then perform the relevant achievement action after the 1.0 update rather than relying on the old save’s past statistics. [1]

Repeat an old boss kill for its achievement

The FAQ uses Eikthyr to explain the rule: the kill achievement requires another Eikthyr kill after 1.0, even if that character had defeated the boss many times beforehand. This is a concrete example of new tracking, not an instruction to delete progress or assume a save conversion failed. [1]

Steps

  1. For the Eikthyr achievement, defeat Eikthyr again on the eligible character and world after downloading 1.0. [1]

Clear cheated items if the block is temporary

Cheated items are visibly marked. A non-cheated character that picks one up enters a temporary cheated state and cannot unlock achievements until all cheated items are removed from the inventory. Check every such item, rather than removing only one and assuming the condition has cleared. Hammer-mode is also described as a temporary cheat that blocks certain achievements. [1]

Steps

  1. For the item-caused temporary state, discard all marked cheated items before attempting the qualifying achievement action again. [1]

Do not confuse permanent cheat flags with temporary inventory state

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Most cheat commands permanently flag the current character and world as ineligible for achievements, and characters that used cheats before 1.0 are also marked. The FAQ names freefly as an exception, but does not offer a general flag-removal method for deliberate cheat use. Removing an inventory item should therefore not be promised to repair a permanently flagged save. [1]

Account for the separate 1.0.20 labeling correction

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

There was also a separate 1.0 launch bug that incorrectly marked some valid items as cheated. Iron Gate’s 1.0.20 patch resets cheated flags on older items and build pieces to undo that damage. The patch entry concerns the incorrect labels; it does not replace the FAQ’s permanent character-and-world eligibility rules. [2]
