Build a closed frame large enough for an NPC
The current official Terraria Wiki covers desktop, console and mobile housing, with separate legacy rules for old consoles and 3DS. A valid house needs a closed frame and at least 60 but fewer than 750 tiles including that frame. A simple 9-block-wide by 7-block-high exterior is one valid-size example. Keep solid floor space for the NPC instead of assuming that an entirely platform-built box satisfies the home-tile check. [1]
Steps
- Make a closed 9-by-7 exterior as a straightforward size example, with an enclosed interior and solid standing area. [1]
Add safe background walls and the required furniture
Housing checks the frame, furniture and properties. Replace unsafe natural background walls when the query reports that they need replacing. The house needs one qualifying light, table, chair and entrance item. A torch, work bench, chair and wood platform are listed as readily obtainable examples; ordinary doors also qualify. Not every luminous block counts as a light source. [1]
Steps
- Provide safe background walls and a torch, work bench, chair and qualifying door or platform entrance, then check the room. [1]
Use Housing Query to diagnose the actual rejection
Open inventory and select the small house button above the armor slots. Choose the housing question mark and use the Use/Attack input inside the room. Its response distinguishes missing walls or furniture, incorrect size, corruption, an occupied room and no standing space. Follow that message instead of repeatedly adding random furniture to a structurally invalid house. [1]
Steps
- Inventory → house button → Housing Query, then use the query inside the room and correct its specific message. [1]
Assign an available NPC only after the room is suitable
When the query reports suitable housing, select an existing NPC’s flag and place it in the house. Only NPCs already present in the world have flags in that menu. Making a valid spare house does not bypass every NPC’s spawn conditions; the wiki separately explains that a random empty suitable house is assigned when an NPC’s initial conditions are first met.
