Choose Modern or Classic for the fighter you will use online
Modern uses a simplified special-move input, while Classic is the six-button control type. Dynamic is separate: it chooses attacks or appropriate combos through an AI-controlled auto-attack scheme and is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes. For online play, pick a supported type in the fighter’s online settings rather than trying to enable Dynamic in matchmaking. [1]
Open Battle Settings from Battle Hub or Fighting Ground
For the Steam keyboard layout, press R while in Battle Hub or Fighting Ground to open Battle Settings. This menu governs online matches and also contains ranked and casual matchmaking. Do not confuse the online character selection with the separate overworld or battle input-remapping controls in the broader Options menu. [1]
Steps
- In Battle Hub or Fighting Ground on Steam keyboard, press R to open Battle Settings. [1]
Use Character and update the highlighted fighter
Go to the Character tab and highlight the fighter whose online controls you want to configure. The manual says that each character has a preferred control type. Press T on the Steam keyboard to update the highlighted character’s settings, then choose the desired type. This allows a Modern fighter and a Classic fighter to coexist in the same roster without requiring one global preference. [1]
Steps
- On Character, highlight the fighter, press T to update its settings and select its preferred control type. [1]
Apply one type to the roster only when intended
If you want every character to use the current type, press T again while on Edit Character. Capcom documents this as the action that applies the current control type to all characters. Otherwise, keep the per-character choices. The battle HUD includes a control-type icon, which can help confirm the type being used once the fight is running. [1]
Steps
- For a roster-wide preference, press T while on Edit Character to apply the currently selected type to all characters. [1]
