Start with the Ship Computer
The official Codex places the Ship Computer first in the connection sequence. Establish that connection before adding the other devices. The Connect tool is shown with E in the documented controls; the procedure then starts at a Connector and ends at the device being added. Follow that direction so you can see which connection you are creating. [1]
Steps
- Activate the Connect tool, then press the left mouse button on a Connector. [1]
Drag and release to create a device connection
Hold the connection from the Connector and drag it to the device you want to add. Releasing the left mouse button creates the link. The Codex also warns that repeating the action on an already connected device disconnects it. Use that same behavior deliberately when changing the network instead of repeatedly clicking a finished link. [1]
Steps
- Drag from the Connector to the required device, then release the left mouse button to create the connection. [1]
Use Shift for the faster connection method
The alternative shortcut begins by selecting a Connector. Hold either Left Shift or Right Shift, then left-click a device. The Codex also documents Shift-clicking a connector to connect or disconnect multiple devices at once. Because the shortcut handles disconnection too, check the existing links when using it to change a working grid. [2]
Steps
- Select the Connector, hold Left Shift or Right Shift and left-click the device. Use the connector-wide shortcut when you intend to change several links together. [2]
Join connector groups back to the computer
A separate grid can contain connected devices while still lacking a connection to the Ship Computer. The Codex marks that condition with an icon. Its prescribed fix is to chain connectors to extend the computer’s reach. Check this relationship when a newly added part of the ship appears isolated from the rest of the network. [3]
Steps
- Chain the separate connectors together so the required devices share the computer’s connected grid. [3]
Give critical devices more than one connection
The Codex recommends extra redundancy for critical infrastructure such as the Ship Computer, reactors, batteries, Stasis Array, Oxygen Pumps, heaters, doors and airlocks. Build additional connectors and connect important devices through more than one link. This reduces dependence on a single damaged section and helps preserve connectivity when part of the ship is destroyed. [4]
Steps
- Add the extra connectors and links around critical infrastructure after establishing the main connected grid. [4]
