Space Engineers: How to Store and Retrieve a Ship with the Services Terminal

Check grid ownership and world limits, store a nearby dynamic ship, then retrieve it with the placement and sharing settings you intend.

Grid Storage works at player-built Services Terminals and NPC Trade Stations. It removes a grid from the active world to free PCU and space. The grid must be dynamic rather than a station, and you must own most of its blocks. World block and PCU limits still apply, and your storage allocation must have space. The documented default is 100 stored grids. [1]

Steps

  1. Bring the eligible grid within 200 meters of the terminal and open its Services Menu. Choose the Storage Service and Active Grids tab. [1]

Select the grid and send it to storage

Inventory handling depends on the world setting. If items are not allowed inside stored grids, remaining contents are placed into a temporary container when storage happens. Collect those contents. Grid Storage is distinct from Salvage, whose sale forfeits items left inside a grid; choose the service that matches your intention. [1]

Steps

  1. Select the intended entry in Active Grids, then choose Send to Storage. If the world ejects its inventory, retrieve the temporary container’s contents. [1]

Request the stored ship at the current terminal

The Stored Grids tab lists the grids available for retrieval. Select one and use Retrieve from Storage. A delivery countdown appears at the top right; larger grids can take longer. The guide documents a Space Credit payment that reduces the current countdown by 50 percent. Server configuration can alter the retrieval timings and associated settings. [1]

Steps

  1. Open Stored Grids, select the correct ship and press Retrieve from Storage. Wait for delivery, or use the displayed expedite option if you accept its credit cost. [1]

Choose safe arrival placement

Automatic deployment places the arriving grid within 200 meters of the terminal. You can instead hold it on arrival for manual placement. The grid returns exactly as stored, so an aircraft stored without being flight ready does not become flight ready in storage. Before retrieval, consider whether the destination suits its parked or powered state. [1]

Steps

  1. For a specific arrival area, enable Precision Mode in the terminal’s Control Panel and use its three directional sliders. Orientation is relative to the deploying terminal. [1]

Review ownership before sharing a stored grid

Stored grids are private by default. Sharing is configured per grid in Stored Grids, while Anyone Can Use makes the terminal itself public. Those are different permissions. A player who retrieves a shared grid assumes its ownership, so share only the ships you intend that player to take. [1]

Limits & applicability

  • Dedicated server owners can set Max Stored Grids to zero to disable storage entirely. A terminal’s existence does not override that world-level setting. [1]
