Slay the Spire: How to Set Up Custom and Endless Challenges

Unlock Custom Mode with Daily play, choose built-in modifiers for a longer or randomized run, and distinguish those controls from Steam Workshop content.

Play a Daily Climb to open Custom Mode

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Custom Mode’s unlock requirement was reduced after its original announcement: Weekly Patch 34 makes it available when the highest Daily score is above zero. Patch 2.0 also makes the unlock work when a Daily Climb is played offline. If an old guide says you must win a Daily for My Lucky Day, use these later changes when deciding what to do next. Offline Daily play is included in the later unlock behavior. [1] [2] [3]

Steps

  1. Play a Daily Climb and record a score above zero to meet the revised unlock condition. [1]

Choose Endless for an extended challenge and consider Blight Chests separately

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Custom Mode lets you turn modifiers on or off to create a challenge. Choose Endless when you want a run that keeps building the deck against increasingly strong monsters. Blight Chests is a separate modifier: boss chests give unique, unavoidable blights. Decide whether you want that additional constraint instead of assuming it is simply another name for Endless. The released notes establish both modifiers; they do not give a fixed maximum floor or promise a particular deck can survive indefinitely. The two choices have different consequences. [4] [3]

Steps

  1. Enable Endless for increasingly strong enemies; enable Blight Chests only if you also want its unavoidable boss-chest blights. [4]

Choose Daily Mods or Controlled Chaos for different kinds of randomness

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

Daily Mods starts a Custom run with three random Daily modifiers. Controlled Chaos instead starts you with Frozen Eye and adds ten random cards to the bottom of the draw pile at the start of each turn. Choose Daily Mods for a random bundle of run rules, or Controlled Chaos for that recurring card-injection rule. They change different parts of a run; selecting the latter does not mean the three-modifier bundle has also been selected. [5]

Use Play with Mods only when adding Workshop content

Platforms: PCUpdated Evidence checked

The built-in Custom modifiers are distinct from community content installed through Steam Workshop. For Workshop content, the developer’s procedure is to subscribe to a mod on the Workshop page and choose Play with Mods when launching the game. Use that launch route when your task actually requires a community mod. You can configure the built-in challenge modifiers above through Custom Mode without treating each named modifier as a separate Workshop subscription. Custom Mode itself provides selectable modifiers. [6] [3]
